Sensa: The Lost Language of the Ancient Mysteries by Dorje Jinpa is an inquiry into the secrets of archetypal symbolism. This book investigates in great detail the language used by high level initiates. Sensa is thoroughly researched with extensive references to other intriguing sources.
Although Sensa is shorter (at just over 200 pages) when compared to other books of this nature, this page count is deceptive, as it will likely take some time to make your way through the book and thoroughly understand what is written. In fact, I believe that Sensa will be a book that I will be revisiting many times along my spiritual journey; as my perspective changes I suspect I will gain more insights from later readings as different vantage points emerge.
As I make my way through Sensa, a list of the characteristics of an esoteric language stood out to me. Although the list itself is an effective summary, there are layers within each statement which may be understood at the surface layer, but also through the detailed investigation within the Sensa book as well as the referenced sources within the book.

- It is the original language from which the other languages of the world are mere distorted reflections.
- It awakens the consciousness to an understanding of higher truth.

- It was taught in the Mystery Schools.
- The shapes and sounds of its letters directly reflect fundamental principles of nature.
- Through this language the spiritual will is implemented.
- It connects the earthly spheres and the spiritual world.
- It is revealed to the initiate during initiation into the Mysteries.
- It is particularly suited for communicating wisdom.
- It is used to impart, mind to mind, the secrets of initiation.
- It is used by initiated to communicate with each other.
- It is used as a subtle form of pictorial speech.
- It is used to veil the secrets of initiation from the uninitiated.
- It is a natural language reflecting the laws of nature and evolution.
- It is used to further the spiritual evolution of the world.
- It is a symbolic expression of the divine WORD of creation.
- It is a language of great creative power.
- Certain words of power sounded in this language connect the initiate with the higher beings and principles with they correspond.
- It is a visual and audible reflection of the divine archetype.
- It is a universal language known to initiates of all countries.
- It was not arbitrarily devised but rather visually and accurately corresponds to natural principles.
There is much to consider when contemplating the preceding list and undoubtedly something will strike your interest regardless of your location on the path to spiritual enlightenment.
Overall Sensa is a great read for anyone interested in symbolism, sacred geometry, and the ancient mysteries. Fans of Carl Jung’s later work will also find Sensa to be a fascinating read.
