A Synthesis of Alchemy by Dorje Jinpa
The initiates of the ancient Hermetic tradition all agree that the theory of alchemy is based upon the essential unity of all things, that everything has a common basis and origin. When applied to the physical plane this common basis has been called the prima materia, or first matter. The ancient Greeks called it 'aether,' from which we obtain the term ether. If a physical substance could be reduced to its original condition, the alchemists reasoned, it could then be built upon in such a was as to produce any know element of substance.
